Wanaka, NZ at a Glance
Located at the southern end
of Lake
Wanaka about an hour from Queenstown,
the resort town of Wanaka features outdoor adventure of every kind. Central to
the Otago region of New
Zealand's South Island,
the town is surrounded by splendid lakes, rivers and mountains. Originally, it
was settled during the Otago Gold Rush of the 1860s but today Wanaka enjoys a
different sort of excitement—tourism. The town is loved by many for its
continental climate and a spirit less commercialized than Queenstown and more
laid back. More so, it is a gateway to many of the region's attractions, including
Mount
Aspiring National Park, the crystal waters of Lake Wanaka and the ski fields
at Mount
Cardrona and Treble
Cone. On a more local scale, Wanaka boasts a growing number of excellent restaurants
and cafes.
It is also the home of Puzzling
World—with its Great Maze, incredible Illusion Rooms, Puzzle Café
and eccentric architecture—and Paradiso
Cinema—a classic old cinema, best known for its unusual seating options
and tasty treats.
